Withers

The withers is the ridge between the shoulder blades of a dog. This term is also applied to other four legged animals including horses. With cows the measurement is usually to the top of the hips. The withers is the measurement used to identify whether a dog conforms to the expected breeding standard for that particular breed. Note though just because a dog does not conform to this standard does not invalidate that dog from being that type of breed.
