Scenthound
Scenthounds (scent hounds) are a type of dog that hunts by using scent and endurance, rather than using sight and speed as sighthounds do. Most of dog breeds of the scenthound variety tend to have drooping ears. It is thought that this allows them to get scent from the air and have it stick around the dogs nose. These dogs also tend to have large nasal cavities as would be expected. Also it is thought that their loose lips tend to help in have the particular from the prey's scent stick to it.
These breeds tend to have voices which they use when running, so that hunters can follow behind them. This means that the bark very much carries in this situation even in a forest.
Due to the nature of not having to have the prey in the view, the scenthound does not have to be as fast as a sighthound. The flip side is that they do need endurance as they need to be able to outlast the prey in the chase. Scenthounds generally work in packs. If the hunters are on horse back then longer legged scenthounds are used and if hunters on foot, shorter legged dogs are used.
